Are Shampoo Bars Better?

StarBars are better for your hair than most bottled shampoos, not because of the shape but because of the ingredients. The bar (no bottle!) is better for the planet.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate in Shampoo

The main ingredient in most liquid shampoo (and even some shampoo bars) is sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). This is a surfactant - a chemical that binds with dirt and oil to wash it away. It is cheap and has a ton of cleaning power, which is why you find it in household cleaners, car washing liquid, laundry detergent and dish soap. This harsh surfactant will clean your hair, but it also is way too strong and can strip the natural oils and even the color out of your hair. SLS can leave your hair fragile, frizzy and breakable. It can leave your scalp itchy and flaky. Some people confuse dandruff and psoriasis with what is simply a scalp irritated by SLS.

SLS may be tolerable to the hair and scalp at 1 or 2%. But liquid shampoo can be up to 30% SLS.

Other Surfactants Are More Gentle

There are other choices when it comes to surfactants. StarBars contain small amounts of five different surfactants. The main one is sodium cocoyl isothionate, also known as baby foam. This lovely, gentle cleanser is derived from coconut oil and removes all the dirt and excess oil from your hair and scalp.

pH Balanced

You’ve probably heard of pH, the measure of how acidic or basic  a substance is. Your hair and scalp have an acidic pH, around 6 or below. If your shampoo has a higher pH, it gets your hair all dry and frizzed out, or conversely it can cause your scalp to make excess oil to try to rebalance the pH. We add a touch of natural citric acid to StarBars to bring down the pH to the level your hair is looking for

An Added Bonus

And last but certainly not least, a shampoo bar has no plastic bottle. Our boxes are 100% recyclable right in your curbside recycle bin. There’s no plastic, and the bar just melts away at the end leaving no garbage at all.

Better for your hair, better for the planet!
