Why is the Part in my Hair Getting Wider?

hAVE YOU NOTICED YOUR PART IS MORE PRONOUNCED?

The part in your hair is something you probably don’t think much about. Until suddenly, you look in the mirror and think “holy cow, that’s alotta scalp showing!”

A widening part can be the sign of many conditions such as female hair loss, male pattern baldness, illness, shock or trauma. But there are a few easy things to try before heading to the doctor to get drugs like minoxodil or spironolactone.

  1. Try parting your hair in a different place. Years of parting in the same place can cause a more prominent part because you have trained the hair not to grow there.

  2. Give yourself a gentle scalp massage. When you are shampooing, massage your head with your fingertips (not with your nails though!) That will stimulate the scalp and get blood flowing to it.

  3. Don’t use a shampoo with sulfates. If there is sodium lauryl sulfate in your shampoo, you are cleansing with something that is too harsh for your hair. SLS is found in car washing detergents! Don’t put it on your head.

  4. Try a shampoo and conditioner with soothing extracts and proteins. Certain ingredients have been shown to re-grow hair. Rice protein, ginger extract, quinoa protein and seaweed have all been shown to have positive effects on hair growth.

  5. Brush your hair carefully. As you get older your hair generally gets more delicate. Don’t yard on it with the brush. Detangle carefully and don’t pull too hard. This bamboo brush and rice hull comb are amazing, gentle detanglers.

  6. Be sure you are getting enough vitamins in your diet. What you eat can affect your hair and skin. If you aren’t able to eat a balanced diet, take a multivitamin. Proper hydration is important for hair and skin health as well.
