Why is it so important to use less Plastic?

My husband (and business partner) Ron has been working in Turkey this summer. Recently on his weekend he went to a beach on the Mediterranean coast. It had been so hot where he was working that he was really looking forward to a nice day in the ocean. However, when he got there, the beach was so covered in garbage he couldn't even walk to the water without stepping in trash. Cigarette butts, food waste, and of course plastic bottles. There was nowhere to put his towel down. He said it was sad and gross.

Just because we don’t see garbage like this on our beaches in the US, it doesn't mean it’s not our problem. That garbage will eventually either blow into the ocean or be taken by the tide into the ocean. It pollutes the water, gets eaten by the sea creatures and poisons them, and gets wrapped around birds and fish. In South Africa I saw a bird with a plastic bottle stuck on its leg. I’m sure it died. In Puerto Rico I saw plastic bottles floating in the bioluminescent bay. At the top of Mt Sinai I had to push garbage aside to sit down.

Plastic waste is a huge problem. It never goes away, just breaks down into smaller pieces. Only a tiny fraction of plastic is recycled.

The best way to keep the planet clean is by not buying things in plastic in the first place. Carry a reusable water bottle, reusable shopping bags, a reusable coffee cup. Drink tap water instead of bottled water. Avoid excessive packaging, or any plastic packaging. These are all common solutions that people have been aware of for years.

Bar soap has been around forever, but BAR SHAMPOO and CONDITIONER are newer innovations. Packaged in recyclable cardboard boxes and lasting as long as about three bottles of shampoo, they seem to be an obvious choice. However, many people are worried to try them because we have been conditioned to think that shampoo is a liquid product.

StarBars contain all the ingredients of a liquid shampoo and conditioner but without the bottle. They are an amazing solution to the plastic problem. You get all the ingredients that leave your hair soft, clean, shiny and strong, but without the bottle. If your family uses 25 bottles of shampoo and conditioner a year times 18 years, that is 450 plastic bottles! If you use StarBars, that equals zero bottles.

Be part of the solution. #noplasticplease
